Records of Pickens County

Cherokee Indians resided in the North Georgia Mountains as well as parts of North Carolina and Tennessee, before they were forced to remove to the west when White men wanted their land. The Cherokee Land Lottery and the Cherokee Gold Lottery of 1832 distributed the land the Cherokees had ceeded to Georgia by treaty. The Cherokee Indians are remembered today by the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association.

Records for Pickens County, Georgia, and her residents, have been created by the Federal Government (e.g., census records, military records, etc.); the State of Georgia (e.g.the 1832 Cherokee land lottery, state copies of tax digests, Confederate pension records, etc.); Pickens County (property records, probate records, vital records, etc.); and private records (church records, newspapers, etc.). Many (but not all) federal, state, county, and private   records are available on microfilm, and a very few indexes and/or abstracts are available on-line.

The Pickens County Library (Sequoiah Regional Library System of which Pickens County is a part) catalog is on-line. It includes media about Pickens County in book and microform. A catalog search of Pickens County will list a great number of records. You may also wish to search for more general types of records such as church, deeds, etc.

According to the Pat Bryant's Georgia Counties: Their Changing Boundaries [revised by Ingrid Shields (Atlanta: Secretary of State, 1983)] Pickens County's boundaries changed as follows: Pickens
