Hamilton Mayfield

Grandfather of MVHS, Inc., member Carl Mayfield, Springfield, Virginia

Hamilton Mayfield was born in DeKalb Co., Georgia, in 1820, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Mayfield. At the age of 17 he joined Lindsey’s Mounted Militia where he served under Capt. James Word during the Cherokee removal from North Georgia. He later received a pension. He was also in the Mexican War of 1847 although he did not see action. During the War Between the State he served as Corporal in the Roswell Batt., Co. A, under Gen. Joseph Wheeler. His mission was to protect the Roswell Woolen Factory, source of material for Confederate uniforms. He was paroled after the surrender on May 9, 1865 by orders from Col. Hamlin at Augusta, Georgia. Prior to his Confederate service, he was in the Gilmer and Pickens County area.

Hamilton Mayfield had serious ties to North Georgia beginning with his service during the Cherokee removal. He married, 1st, Catherine Martin in North Carolina before 1840 and they had at least two children:

i. Talitha Catherine Mayfield, b. abt. 1840, NC, married Mr. Wilson. “Delitha” Wilson was mentioned in Hamp’s 1907 will.
ii. Henry Wilbor Mayfield, b. abt. 1844 in NC, and not seen again after 1850 census of Campbell County, Georgia.

The second wife of Hamilton Mayfield was Ary Jackson whom he married 28 September 1849 in Campbell County, Georgia. The family is enumerated in Campbell County, Georgia, on 26 August 1850.1 They were parents of at least five children:

iii. Leroy Hamilton Mayfield, b. 1850, in Georgia (probably Campbell County).2 He was located in Georgia on the 1860 and the 1870 census, and in 1880 in Blount County, Alabama. Leroy married, 1st Malinda Corbin, 25 December 1867 in Pickens County, Georgia, and 2nd, Ruth Hamby. Leroy and Ruth had two children. Ruth died in 1882. Leroy married, 3rd, Mary Adeline Compton, 3 September 1882 and the couple had eight children.
iv. John Mayfield, b. abt. 1852 in Georgia.3 He was last found residing with the John J. Ray family in Jasper, Pickens County, Georgia, in 1870.4
v. Josephine Mayfield, b. abt. 1855 in Georgia;5 married J.B. Norton, 1870 in Georgia. They had 5 children. The family was said to have lived near Cherry Log, Georgia.
vi. Licena “Cena” Mayfield, b. abt. 1857 in Georgia;6 married S.G. Bowers in 1874 in Georgia. They had 8 children. In 1870, Licena was living with the Stephen Griffeth family in Tate.7
vii. Richmond Mayfield, b.abt. 1860 in Georgia;8 last found on the 1870 federal census.

In 1860, Ary J. Mayfield and her children were residing in Sharp Mountain District of Pickens County.9 A Hamp Mayfield, age 38 was residing in Bowdon’s District of Carroll County with an adult female called Mary (age 30).10

Hamilton Mayfields third wife was Minerva E.C. Colins Gipson (former wife of William Asa Gipson of Gilmer County, Georgia, brother-in-law of Hamilton Mayfield’s sister, Edith).

Minerva Mayfield died in Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas on 17 Jun 1911 and was buried at the Delphi Cemetery. Hamilton and Minerva were parents of nine children.

viii. Amanda Mayfield, b. October 1860 in Georgia; married George Alexander Little in 1877 (5 children).
ix. Thomas Mayfield, b. 1863 in Georgia and d. 1881, in Alabama
x. Charles Jackson Mayfield, b. 1865 in Alabama, married, 1st, Carrie Amanda Moore, 1893, in Alabama (11 children); married, 2nd, Fannie Early in 1919 in Alabama (no issue).. They had eleven children. He married, 2nd, Fannie Early in 1919 in Alabama (no issue).
xi. Sarah Jane Mayfield, b. 1867 in Alabama, married 1st, Jacob Treece, 1881, in Alabama (7 children); married, 2nd, Abe Humphry, 1911, in Arkansas (1 child).
xii. William Henry Mayfield, b. 7 April 1869 in Alabama; married Martha Frances Hundley, 1889, in Alabama (10 children).
xiii. Laura A. Mayfield, b. 1871, d. 1886
xiv. James Andrew Mayfield; b. 26 June 1875, d. 22 Jun 1943 in Alabama; married, 1st, Jeannie E. Compton, 1898 (1 child), and married, 2nd, Alice Speakman Stockley, 1900 in Alabama. The couple had fourteen children.
xv. Leander Mayfield, b. 2 November 1877 in Alabama; married Cora N. Hundley in Alabama. The couple had eight children.
xvi. Texicana Mayfield, b. 25 Dec 1878 in Alabama; married, 1st, Alonzo Livingston in 195 in Alabama (four children, and married, 2nd, Fred J. Rivers in 1925 (1 son).

Hamilton Mayfield married, fourth, Nancy Hinkle Long 17 September 1885 in Alabama. They had no issue. It is said that at this time Hamilton was residing in Cullman County, Alabama with his sister, Edith (Mayfield) Gipson and claimed to be single when he married Nancy. Hamilton Mayfield died 9 November 1907 and Nancy Hinkle Long Mayfield died in Russellville, Franklin County, Alabama, 6 June1927.

On May 26, 2007, the family and friends of Hamilton Mayfield gathered at Russellville, Franklin County, Alabama, Oak Grove Cemetery for the presentation of a Civil War plaque to Hamilton’s honor. From Hamilton’s four marriages and sixteen children, there are over 500 known descendants today.
